Synopsis

Motivation: Unexplained artifacts in MRI can hinder diagnosis. This project aimed to address an uncharacteristic artifact resembling susceptibility artifact but appearing intermittently without clear cause.

Goal(s): To determine the possible source of the artifact to enhance diagnostic accuracy and prevent recurrence.

Approach: Involved a thorough examination of three different patients scanned with a 1.5T Philips MRI system over three months. Detailed reviews of patient histories, imaging sequences, coil configurations, and MRI equipment inspections were conducted to identify any contributing factors to the artifact's occurrence

Results: Despite extensive investigation, the artifact’s cause remained elusive with no evidence of procedural errors, hardware malfunctions, or foreign materials.

Impact: This study emphasizes the challenges of identifying elusive MRI artifacts, impacting radiologists and MRI technologists by highlighting areas where diagnostic accuracy can be improved. Developing a framework for investigating rare artifacts could significantly enhance diagnostic precision and patient care.
